Ron Hardy Mixes

Ron Hardy DJing at the Muzic Box, Chicago

In the mid-1980s, Ron Hardy was one of Chicago’s most influential DJs. When Frankie Knuckles left The Warehouse to open the Power Plant in November 1982, owner Robert Williams opened the Muzic Box at 1632 S Indiana Ave. He poached Ron Hardy from a small bar called the Ritz. After the original Muzic Box was condemned, Williams moved the club to 326 N Michigan Ave. Hardy’s style was imaginative, with radical tape edits, fast tempos, and heavy EQing. Importantly, he inspired local producers and played their tracks.

Most of the mixes below are from DeepHousePage.com (DHP). Tracklists were documented with help from readers, DHP forum members, and Jason at suenomartino.net. Additions and corrections are welcome using the contact form.

  1. Thanks for preserving these play lists and keeping the spirit of Ron Hardy alive.

  2. Anybody know where I can find Ron Hardy’s version of “Godfather of House Music”? That is my favorite house track of ALL time!

  3. 641. RonHardy1985.rm
Live at the Music Box, 1985
Track #3 is “One For The Money” by The Whispers.

  4. Great resource, thanks. Amazing listening to these mixes now, so far ahead of their time. I think track 6 ‘beats’ on 1181 may be the flip side of On and On, the much vaunted 1st house record. You can listen to it on Youtube. Thanks again.

  5. Glad to see someone continuing the playlists.. Nice one.

  6. What a labour of love!!! ++ big ups!!

  7. Ha – it sure keeps on going. he sure did leave a legacy, didn’t he! what’s up, Sueno!

  8. This is crucial. I was looking for a song and came up on this website. Keep it up.

  9. I was wondering how Ron felt about his music. It made me so happy. It made me whole and complete. Can someone who knew ron tell us how he felt about how he felt about his music. His music was let joy inside my soul. Me and my husband are still addicted today.

  10. Sylvia,
I knew Ron from ’85 til his death. If Ron was still here, he’d most likely be trippin’ off all the praise. I remember walking to his play-brother’s apartment where W/we were gonna crash for the night after a party he did at AKA’s, and he asked U/us why people are always crowding around the booth and watching him instead of dancing. Brian (his play-brother) tried to explain that people were in awe of what he was doing, but he still couldn’t grasp it. Deep down he had to know that he was the shyt, but he spoke in humble terms.
His attitude toward music was that if it was good, it should be played no matter what genre a song fell into. During the course of one party it wouldn’t be uncommon to hear any of the party songs listed above, but also songs like “Take A Stroll Through Your Mind” by The Temptations, “Maureen” by Sade, “Walk The Dog” by Laurie Anderson, “Can’t Hide Love” by Jimmy Smith, etc. His taste spanned many, many genres — disco, house, dancefloor jazz, funk, soul, hip hop, rock, Latin jazz, easy listening… His knowledge of artists was remarkable. Per Ron’s recommendations, I’ve added some great artists to My collection. If Ron were still alive I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that he would’ve added drum ‘n’ bass, future jazz and broken beat to his repertoire.
I wish he was still here. I miss him so much and think about him damn near every day.

  11. On entry #1170 (ronhardy1985-86-mark), track #17 is Black Ivory’s “Walking Downtown (Saturday Night)”.
This is such an awesome site. Big ups, homie.

  12. Wow .. Amazing music, thanks a million 🙂 I’ll be 31 this year and have been listening to electronic music since I was 16. It’s a beautiful thing to hear where it all came from.. Thanks again. Al

I guess someone had suggested that #6 was the B side of “On and On” by Mach. Discogs (a reliable source on record releases) has the B side of that record as “Funky Mix” which (can be heard on youtube &) sounds nothing like that original beat.

Mach’s records were full of samples from disco records, not original 808 beats. Thanks on all of the work, though. I am not a fan of “house” (Deep, Chicago, NY, whatever you want to call it). I do research the origins of modern dance music. From these mixes, I think I like Ron’s style much better than the man that got most of the honors for “house,” Frankie Knuckles.

  32. Thanks for catching that. I’ll correct it–I’m pretty sure it’s the end of Jesse Saunder’s version or one of the bonus beats from that single.

So funny, I use to check ID’s at “The Box” back in ’85 thru ’86…not even really sure how that shyt happened, but glad that I did experience that atmosphere! There will never-ever be a set like that shyt! Muzic was SooooBangn’ that you could hear it after being out of there by 7am Sun…still hear that shyt playn (ringing)in your head Sunday afternoon.
One more thing that I liked & appreciated about “The Box”…no alcohol lic. required…it wasnt served! Just big-azz plastic gallons of water & fruit laid out on trays. What was dropped in the water, not sure :-)) but if you were High..it was on your own shyt!
Mannnnnnnnnnn, I miss that fuckn place & wish was able to video that set on a phone, like you can do now! Oooh well, my memory card is A-Okay on that shyt!
