International Experimental Acoustic Guitar Anthology

Michael V. Farley & Jim Sande, 2003

I’m struck by the wide range of music on this compilation. All of the compositions are played on acoustic guitar, but some have undergone computer processing. Aiden Baker makes use of delay and overdubs on two tracks which bookend the collection. Thick layers of strumming create engrossing spaces of sound. On “Acgtr 3” the effect is relaxing, while “Acgtr 1” is overwhelming. Greg Davis’ “Dentist’s Office or Supermarket” offers conventional playing paired with discordant computer-processed tones. In stark contrast, Olaf Rupp’s playing is bizarre and kinetic. His lightning-fast plucks dart to and fro. On “Quasimotif” Blunderspublik contributes a sweet, melodic composition. Ticks and fretwork add unusual textures. If nothing else, this compilation forces listeners to reevaluate the possibilities of solo acoustic playing. But more than that, it offers a window into a richly diverse slice of avant-garde music. And it’s an enjoyable listen.
