Signaldrift: Set Design

The Consumers Research and Development Label, 2005

Set Design cover

I wanted to like this album, but the tracks tend to blend together with similar, simplistic sounds. On “Yellow Leaves,” familiar-sounding electronics and a short vocal sample repeat until fade-out. A little more melody would help here. Similarly “Dutch Assassin” sounds like it’s been done before. Echoey synth washes and a basic dance beat remind me of early Speedy J. New Order-like guitar samples add a little charm. “Purple” sounds a lot like the Telegram mix of Björk’s “You’ve Been Flirting Again.” “Dede” is straight-forward, repetitive, and dancey. “128” starts out that way, but it has cool melodic passages towards the end. It’s my favorite track on the album, and it almost makes up for the mediocrity of its companions. Signaldrift definitely has production skills. Just a few new ideas for melodies and sounds would help his music stand out.
