Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit: Secret Rhythms 2

Nonplace, 2006

This sequel to 2002’s Secret Rhythms is much like its predecessor. It is deceptively light and simple, but small variations and a smattering of acoustic instruments offer tantalizing hints of depth. A miniature orchestra contributes throughout with clarinet, melodica, vibraphone, and various guitars, while David Sylvian sings poetically on “The Librarian.” This music is just a little too prog rock for me. In fact, the first Secret Rhythms never found a permanent home in my CD collection. Nonetheless, this album may cross-over to fans of dub and ambient. It’s difficult to categorize, but easy to enjoy.
