DJ Shadow: Preemptive Strike
Mo Wax/FFRR, 1997
Fans of breaking and scratching will love DJ Shadow’s Preemptive Strike, a collection of rare, previously-released singles. There’s hard, satisfying beats, incredibly fast scratching, and some typically spacey vocal samples thrown in for good measure. All four parts of “What Does Your Soul Look Like” are finally in one place. “Influx” throws down a catchy bassline. “High Noon,” the newest of the bunch, uses guitars and a disturbingly familiar chord progression to enhance a jazzy groove. A bonus CD contains a twenty-five minute megamix by Q-Bert featuring gorgeous turntable work, especially around the twelve-minute mark when Q-Bert brings in his trademark love of B-movie sci-fi snippets. Grab this one before copyright-owners start to hear the samples.
