Autechre: Peel Session

Warp, 1999

Peel Session cover

Pick up Autechre’s Peel Session. Though it’s a short release, it features three satisfying live tracks recorded in October, 1995. First up is “Milk DX” with Ae’s trademark crunches and clacks under beautiful, melodic vocal snippets. Very hypnotic. Next is “Inhake 2” which starts a bit weak (I dislike the first 17 seconds or so) but quickly gains momentum with catchy little samples. “Drone” is a different story altogether. It’s a long, slow-building track based on a single chord. Sounds swirl between the channels over soft, yet potentially-deafening beats. “Drone” requires the kind of patience necessary to appreciate Basic Channel. Overall, this EP’s an excellent recording. The CD-R-esque art is cool too.
