Coldcut: “More Beats and Pieces”
Ninja Tune, 1997
Here’s the premise of “More Beats and Pieces” according to the blurb on the CD insert: “The daddies of sonic stupidity pressed up platters of souped up beats & pieces and distributed them amongst the most delinquent sound terrorists, to wreak havoc inter-pretation in their own styles.” The CD single features six incredible mixes and a Quicktime music video. The “Daddy Rips It Up Mix (Max Chop)” by Coldcut is like a mini version of their Journeys by DJs set. Flip Wilson samples weave in and out of massive beats and frantic scratching. This mix is live cut and paste “composed straight from dex/mixer to multitrack digital editor.” Other highlights are the Kid Koala, Q-Bert, and Strictly Kid Teeba mixes, which all feature analog turntable work recorded to hard disks. The sounds are simply incredible. Even the video is extremely satisfying. In the immortal words of my friend Jason, “I have seen the future and the future is Coldcut.”
