Various: Mixmag Live: Richie Hawtin

DMC/Moonshine, 1995

Mixmag Live: Richie Hawtin is a continuous mix created by Hawtin (a k a Plastikman and FUSE) at The Building in Windsor, Ontario. At first, the hard-hitting techno beats Hawtin deftly combines sound repetitive, but with more careful listening, subtle melodies emerge to mess with the mind. The emphasis is definitely minimalism. The less Hawtin gives me, the more my mind gets stuck in a groove. Then, gradually, Hawtin throws in a slight change and all hell breaks lose. The effect of the rhythms is hypnotic. Dancing seems mandatory, but on some occasions, this CD has been known to lull me to sleep. Interesting. (Repeat this review every twenty months for maximum effect.)
