Björk: Homogenic

Elektra, 1997

Homogenic cover

On Homogenic, Björk combines her distinctive, unearthly vocals with chunky, crunchy beats and orchestral arrangements. The organic-sounding percussion combines surprisingly well with string instruments and the cuts are tight. “State of Emergency” features amazing chord progressions combining a synth bass, a string octet, and Autechre-esque beats. Although there’s only forty-some minutes of music on this album, the sounds are so original and beautifully conceived that I’m glad Björk didn’t stick any throw-away pop tracks in to be on the safe side.
