Squarepusher: Hard Normal Daddy
Warp, 1997
Hard Normal Daddy fulfills my cravings for complex drum and bass. Riffs, not loops, combine with live bass and complex melodies to create a new type of jazz. On “Coopers World,” guitar mixes with fast-paced, uplifting beats. “Beep Street” contrasts frantic percussion with laid-back melodies. It should go without saying, but this LP’s a must for Squarepusher fans. Even if you’re not yet a fan, this release is a good introduction to the Squarepusher sound. There’s a few empty tracks, but most are full to the brim with intoxicating grooves.
