DJ Shadow: Entroducing

Mo Wax/FFRR, 1996

Entroducing cover

DJ Shadow’s Entroducing is an intelligent blend of hip-hop beats and turntable work. With creatively-culled samples, DJ Shadow seamlessly mixes old and new sounds into emotions the original artists never intended to provoke. Slowed-down rap vocals introduce “Midnight in a Perfect World,” the perfect track for late night listening, as the title implies. The “Number Song” is frantic in its energy and familiar countdown vocal samples. Despite his slick studio work, DJ Shadow reminds me of the raw power of a DJ guiding a pair of needles and abusing a crossfader. Pops can be heard in some of the samples. The richness of vinyl is there. DJ Shadow knows his roots.
