Richie Hawtin and Thomas Brinkmann: Concept 1 96:VR
Minus, 1996
The truly diehard Hawtin fans will also want to pick up a copy of 96:VR. On this quirky release, Thomas Brinkmann plays excerpts from the original Concept series on a custom turntable with two arms. As a result, one channel always lags behind the other, sometimes by as much as six seconds. Hawtin’s recordings now have twice as many beats. The effect is mesmerizing. When I turn the balance on my amp all the way to one side I can hear approximations of the original tracks, and the differences are startling. This CD truly must be heard to be believed.
