Richie Hawtin: Concept 1 96:CD
Minus, 1998
In 1996 Richie Hawtin released twelve monthly 12-inch singles in the Concept series. Two years later, he compiles Concept 1 96:CD. According to the Minus Web site, “96:CD contains one bonus track in addition to previously unreleased movements from the original sessions.” Though these tracks are sparse, they are even more hypnotic than Hawtin’s FUSE and Plastikman projects. Driving beats pulse out the trademark taps that transfer consciousness from channel to channel. My favorite excursion is the sixth track, a muted, reverborating bass beat and hiccuping synths. The rhythm breathes for almost fourteen minutes of bliss, and at the end my mind switches back and forth between two beats in counterpoint.
