Luke Vibert: Big Soup
Mo Wax, 1997
This is one kicking album. Hip-hop and electronics are merged on a number of groovy tracks. The spacey samples set just the right atmosphere. Deep bass and heavy beats are combined with a DJ’s intuition. I like the latter half of the album the best but the entire LP grew on me after a couple of listens. Stretched out vocal hooks and jazzy drum and bass fuse to make “No Turn Unstoned” one of the more addictive tracks. Ring-modulated samples add an amusing twist. “Am I Still Dreaming” features samples of an annoying kid’s voice manipulated to match the infectious beat. Overall, a very satisfying LP. Too bad it still hasn’t been released domestically in the US.
