Squarepusher: Big Loada

Warp/Nothing, 1997

Big Loada cover

Big Loada is another ground-breaking EP from Squarepusher. In this release, Tom Jenkinson continues to do what he does best—screw with his listeners’ minds through intricately programmed jazz-riff percussion. Jenkinson pushes the envelope of drum and bass. Frantic beats collide with live bass and crazy retro synths. The Nothing Records version adds tracks from the Port Rhombus and Vic Acid EPs, which seem to fit in rather well with the later Big Loada material. It’s actually a relief not to hear the music stop after “Jacques Mal Chance (Il N’a Pas de Chance).”
